A ring and pinion gear set will generally provide many miles of reliable service, but with age and miles problems can develop, particularly if maintenance has been neglected. A leaky pinion seal or differential housing can allow the fluid level to be too low in the housing, causing the ring and pinion to fail from a lack of lubrication.
